Random collection of news through food

Nights alone at home are rare lately, which is why I've updated less. Even the odd time to myself is used to lounge around and record podfics in acrobatic but oddly comfortable positions. =P

We've been cooking a lot, and what friends would consider "real" food to boot: fish cooked in maple syrup, scalloped potatoes, vegetable soups. These mornings we make those really thin not-pancakes things (hm, French pancakes?). All of these are surprisingly delicious, wonders of enough cheese, maple syrup and determination from my flatmate. =D

We also have taken to making fantastic desserts. For my brother's birthday a few weeks ago, we made him a Stargate cake:

Recently we've also tested cupcakes and bread. They turned out not only delicious, but also beautiful.






We couldn't resist making an octopus... The majority of these breads had chocolate, jam or cheese centres. Yum!


I'm also learning how to make french braids and all types of long-hair hairdos to the flatmate - who's very patient - and we're watching odd combos of TV series (Girlmore Girls, Dans une galaxie près de chez vous, My Little Ponies, Supernatural, Heroes, White Collar & Card Captor Sakura). We've knitted a baby blanket for a neightbour's baby shower last week-end during those evenings. It was very soft, very thick wool worked with a loom. The mother loved it. ^__^

Wow, you've made some awesome-looking food there! I'm impressed by the stargate construction especially - when the cut-text said a Stargate cake, I was thinking of something more like the usual round cake decorated around the edges like a gate or something.

Also, we generally call "those really thin not-pancakes things" crepes. Sometimes even with the French accent still on the vowel, except I've forgotten which one is correct. ^_^

Thanks! The Stargate required brainstorming, but we've got a thing for making weirdly-shaped cakes for birthdays in the family. With the aid of flatmate, we melted lollipops and hard candy into an aluminum pan then left it cool on the balcony to make the Stargate's "water". It was then inserted into the outer circle of a cake, and poised into the removed middle part of that cake. The pyramids weren't planned... I wanted to have an even ground to put the gate, but miscalculated the amount of cake mix needed in a cookie pan to have it thick enough to be cake-like. The result was a thin, hardened sheet of cake. Not wanting it to waste, I cut it into squares and stacked them like cookies to make pyramids, and stuck the parts together with honey. It turned out pretty cool, and tasty to boot. The honey softened the cake slates center, and it was easy to eat.

All that to say, I think what you described is also what brother had in mind when he requested his cake, but I took it as a personal challenge. ;)

Crèpes? Oh, then this is going to be confusing me all the more. I don't think I'm using crèpes vs pancakes well in everyday language to start with. I may just have to post pictures to illustrate if it comes up, and make everyone hungry. But thanks for the right word! =P

It turned out pretty good. =D When we light it up for him to blow, we put one all candles but one on the desert side, and that last one on the other side of the gate. We could see it shining through the blue-ey sugar, and it forced him to run around to blow on it. =D

Sometime in the last years I've become a passable cook. What is thisss.
